lately…

Hello! It’s the end of summer finally, I am so happy, it was much too hot this year. Some of the leaves are even changing already! The kids go back to school tomorrow and I really couldn’t be more excited this year! They have been at each other’s throats all summer, I hope it was just the heat causing it because a break would be great.

Last week, a migraine hit me hard. I couldn’t knit or read for days, the hangover lasted a couple days. It was rough, I feel like it’s been years since I’ve had one that bad. Before the migraine attack, I managed the get my first Perle Cottage Sock off the needles. I knit it in two days, it was such a difficult sock to put down. I really love how this colorway knits up.

This is such a fun sock pattern! I absolutely love the cuff!! Pattern is Perle Cottage Socks by @orangeknits & yarn is Knit Picks Felici in Balloon Ride #sockknittersofinstagram #socktawk #operationsockdrawer #craftastherapy #knittersofinstagram #knitpick

The sock is knit toe up, this was the way I first learned sock knitting, it came back really quickly. It was my first time doing a gusset on a toe up sock though, I really like it! It fits great. The second sock hasn’t gone too far because of another project I am working on but it’s cast on. I’m knitting the second with the stripes going the opposite direction, I can’t wait to see how they look together.

finally feeling well enough to do things again, I haven't had a migraine so tough to recover from in such a long time 😧 knitting the second #perlecottagesocks 💕 #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #operationsockdrawer #craftastherapy #sock

haven't knit on this blanket in a very long time! Need to get used to knitting these squares again, I might be buying a bunch of yarn tomorrow to attempt to knit a mitered square blanket in a week... it will be worsted yarn, so maybe not impossible... We'

In other knitting news, I pulled out my sock yarn blanket! I only knit one square but it helped me remember how to knit them for another blanket that I’ve started…

a blanket in 10 days? hopefully! 👍 #knittersofinstagram #knittersofig #blanket #birthdayblanket #craftastherapy #makersgonnamake #ourmakerlife

I went out and bought a bunch of Loops & Threads Impeccable yarns. This used to be my favorite yarn but I stopped using it. I think I almost became a yarn snob with using all the soft sock yarns. While I was sick though, I was using old blankets that I crocheted using the Impeccable yarn and they’re so incredibly soft still and they look good, so I decided I would try a new blanket using it again.

I’m attempting to knit a full mitered square blanket before September 7th! I’m not sure if I can do it but I’m going to try. It’s going to be a birthday gift for my son. I have been looking at blankets for months, trying to figure out the perfect one to make him. I decided on the mitered square because it was the first one he told me he wanted, months ago he told me… oh I am such a procrastinator! The squares are not tiny like my sock yarn ones, so I may actually be able to pull it off.

One year anniversary!! It was a year ago that we got these tattoo wedding rings! 💍 it was also a year ago that we finally got married! Took us a long time (12 years) but we did it!

Another thing that happened is, my husband and I celebrated our one year marriage anniversary! We went to Las Vegas last year and finally got married, after 12 years of being together. We also got tattoos instead of wedding rings, I still think they were a great idea, I love them! We actually planned on doing them before going to Vegas so they could be in the pictures but the only place we could get into here basically made fun of us for wanting tattoos on our fingers, saying they would look terrible in a year. But, they were wrong, they still look great.

thanks for stopping in today! must get back to knitting that blanket!

year of projects: week 8

Hello, happy Sunday!

I  missed posting an update last week, not sure why I skipped posting but it happened. I do have some progress to share this week though.

socks – 3/20

finally a finished pair of socks! 😄😄 #sockknittersofinstagram #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #boxosoxkal #manosdeluruguay #ggsecondsocksummer

cast off my second sock last night! Love the Jelly Roll pattern! I need to find more yarn to cast on a second pair in the larger size so I can add the arch ribbing #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #sockknittersofinstagram #jellyrollsocks #operationsockdrawe

I finished my Cable & Lace socks! I also finished my Jelly Roll socks! It’s nice to have some finished pairs happening again. I planned on not casting any more socks on until I got the Blueberry Waffle socks off the needles but those aren’t for me…

cast on the new sock pattern from @orangeknits 💓 I haven't knit toe up in a long time, thought it might feel super weird but it all came back to me! Enjoying this one a lot so far! The yarn is Knit Picks Felici in the Balloon Ride colorway :ball

I just cast on this new pair today using Knit Picks Felici in the Balloon Ride colorway. The pattern is a new one called Perle Cottage Socks, if you buy this weekend, it’s 50% off. I’m really enjoying it so far, so much that I may be at the gusset already. It’s my first time knitting a gusset on a toe up sock.

a flipping adorable sheep! 😍 He's naked now but he'll get his sweater soon 🐑 Pattern is by @attic24 #crochetgram #crochetgirlgang #crochetersofinstagram #craftastherapy #amigurumi #crochetaddicts #makersgonnamake

I stumbled onto a super cute sheep pattern and immediately had to crochet one. It was an extremely quick and fun project to crochet. The pattern is Woolly Sheep and can be found for free on Lucy’s site,  Attic24. He still needs a sweater and I will hopefully get to it soon.

I did not work on any of my blankets in the past couple weeks and I didn’t do any projects to fall into my ‘miscellaneous’ category.

happy things

I like to put together these posts once in awhile because sometimes I focus on too much of the bad things going on around me and it makes me feel miserable. Seeing that there really are some good things actually happening help me beat that feeling.

the fringe
henna tattoos with my girls again! No line at the tent tonight 😊 #yxefringe

We went down to the Fringe in town a couple times this last week and saw some good shows, the @undeadnewlyweds were definitely our favorite act though! 💀 #yxefringe

The Fringe is my favorite annual summer event in the city, we went down to see acts a couple times last week. The henna tent was busy, so we didn’t get to it until our last visit. These tattoos are lasting much longer than our Canada Day ones. We managed to catch a few acts while there too, the Undead Newlyweds were our favorite this year, we hope they’ll be back again next year.

sock knitting
had a productive knitting day even with a headache that knocked me out for awhile 😵 finished up the first sock for my husband and finally cast on the second of my cables & lace socks #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #operationsockdrawer #craftast

ignoring the housework that needs to be done to knit my sock #knittersofinstagram #sockknittersofinstagram #socktawk #craftastherapy #manosdeluruguay

I’ve been making good progress on my socks, ignoring housework to do so too. The Cable & Lace socks are very close to being finished.

looking back...

Putting together the ‘My Yarn Story‘ post was a lot of fun, I enjoyed going back and seeing all the projects I’ve made. The toys were especially fun to see, I hope to get making toys more often again.

year of projects: week 6

It’s Year of Projects update time again. This week I actually wanted to knit and found time to do it, so I have a finish and work on socks happened!

socks – 1/20

not long ago I decided to go back to monogamous sock knitting because I couldn't stand so many socks going at the same time... 😜😜 #knittersofinstagram #sockknittersofinstagram #operationsockdrawer

I still don’t have a finished pair but I’m working on it and hopefully will have at least one pair next week! I now have three HOs (half finished objects). The Blueberry Waffle sock was super quick once I settled into knitting it, once I kitchenered the toe, I cast on for my second Cables & Lace sock. I’m trying not to loose momentum with my socks again.

toys

I finished a toy! My Super Raccoon came off the needles on Wednesday. Knitting this toy really was so much fun. I knit him using mostly Vanna’s Choice yarns and a 3.25 needle. The eyes almost disappear in some light but I’m letting that be ok, I tried to add white felt behind them but it looked crazy, so I just added the black eyes to the black stripe. I don’t think anyone but me really cares about it anyway!

Super Raccoon is ready to fight crime! He's crazy cute 😍 my son has been very patiently waiting on this guy, so he took him the moment I snapped this picture. I love that he still likes what I make! 💓 #knittersofinstagram #toyknitting

I knit this guy for my son and he snatched him as soon as I was done getting this one finished picture. My oldest wants me to knit her toy from the same book as well, so I will be starting on that soon.

blankets – didn’t work on any of my blankets this week.

miscellaneous – nothing this week

books & yarn

First, if you were curious to know how George was managing since being back home. I’d say he’s back to feeling like his old relaxed self again. He’s lazing in all his strange positions again, turning his nose up at dry food and he’s back to wanting playtime again. Playtime is a huge necessity for this guy, he’s full of energy and will attack kid’s legs before bed if he doesn’t get his energy out before then. Thanks for all the sweet comments on his return, we’re all so happy to have him back.

George is definitely starting to feel like himself again 😹😹 his vet check up went great the other day, nothing to worry about just need to get his weight up! 💕 #georgethecat #catsofinstagram #bookstagram

I finished reading I Will Always Write Back this past week. I even wrote a little blurb review on goodreads. I kind of can’t believe that I’m actually keeping up with doing that, it has only been four books but still good. I’ve decided that I’m going to stop grabbing new books from the library and just read my Jane Eyre now, I’m ready to be lost in that world for awhile.

Yesterday, I finished knitting the Super Raccoon! I’m so happy with how he turned out, he’s super adorable. He can stand on his own if you prop his tail right, so cute! I knit him for my son and he so patiently waited on me to finish him. The moment I finally snapped a finished picture, he grabbed him and went to play with him. I hope my kids never tire of the things I knit or crochet for them.

I decided that I would knit this toy in acrylic yarn after what happened with the teddy I knit in nice merino yarn. I’m hoping he won’t fuzz up too much, some of the toys I crocheted in acrylic yarns fuzzed up pretty ugly in the past. I’m hoping that won’t be the case since this has a much tighter gauge than those. For everything but the orange, I used Vanna’s Choice, a yarn I used to hate the feel of but I don’t mind as much now, it feels and looks a lot like Cascade to me, though maybe not as sturdy feeling.

Today I’m linking up with KCCO and Yarn Along.

My Yarn Story

I never really had any interest in learning to crochet or knit growing up. I remember my seeing my grandma crocheting blankets but I don’t think I ever asked to try it out. I did want to cross-stitch though and she helped me do a few stitches in a picture that now hangs in my parent’s home. I can’t remember how old I was but I never really stop cross stitching after that.

Sometime in 2008, I was browsing Pinterest and came across a granny square blanket that I fell instantly in love with. I bought some yarn and started googling ‘how to crochet‘. Most websites that I found said that you needed to start out with chaining and ‘sc’ stitches to really learn but that only frustrated me. I think I spent one day failing over and over at that and gave up for awhile. Eventually, I used all the yarn I bought to make my son who was a baby at the time a pom-pom mobile. I thought crochet just wasn’t for me (after ONE day haha).

I participated in some craft swap and received some cotton yarn, so I decided to give crochet one more shot. This time, I decided to just try crocheting a granny square since that is what I wanted to make, so I searched youtube for a video. My first granny square was not pretty but I crocheted it big enough so that my son, who was a baby at the time, could cuddle with it. He liked it, so I count it as a success.

After that, I was definitely hooked on crochet! I crocheted more granny square blankets for other babies that were around then. I just wanted to keep learning.

Crochet was such an amazing discovery for me. Having three kids so young was pretty stressful and crochet was helping me relax a lot. I was still dealing with some scary depression then too, so it was helping me clear my head and I think may have been what helped me ultimately stop having so many anxiety attacks.

I’ve gone through a lot of different fazes in my crocheting lifetime, I would be pretty much obsessed with crocheting only one type of thing for months on end.

The more comfortable I got with crochet, the more I wanted to push myself. So, I eventually made up my own patterns. I shared most of them on my old, no longer updated blog, Plus 3 Crochet, they all still live there today. I haven’t designed or written anything in quite some time, I don’t know that I will share any patterns again but it’s always a possibility.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to give knitting a try too. I knit a couple dishcloths and towels. But, I never truly got the knitting bug until I gave sock knitting a try. I was amazed by so many sock knitters and thought I would never be able to figure out how to knit socks myself until I made it a goal in 2014. I found a tutorial for toe up socks and just went for it. I felt addicted pretty instantly. Socks are such a relaxing knit.

sockmosaic

I don’t crochet as much as I used to now that I’ve really gotten into knitting but I’m trying to work it back into rotation because I’m finding that I’ve missed it. At some point I am sure I’ll find a happy balance.

So, that’s my yarn story! If you made it all the way to the end, thank you so much for reading! I really enjoyed looking back at everything I’ve made since starting my yarn adventures.
