getting things done (for kids)

I’ve been finishing up some things for the kids lately. First up, this wall hanging I made for my son. He’s interested in everything about the world, he’s constantly on the Maps app just randomly picking out places to look at and learn about. Making a wall hanging from pom poms has been something I’ve wanted to try for quite awhile, I think this was a perfect project to make as practise for what I’d like to eventually make.

I made this to look like his own little world. It took a lot of yarn to make! I enjoyed the process a lot though! The pom poms are attached to a non slip rug pad that I found at the dollar store. This would be a really good floor rug too but I wanted it to hang over his bed. I backed it with foam board so it wouldn’t be so flimsy. I’m so happy with it! He was really excited when I finally hung it up for him. Now I need to figure out my next pom pom project.

this is what I was doing with all the pom poms! It's a wall hanging for my son's room. He's very into world stuff, so I made this to look like his own little planet. 🌎 I'm really happy that it turned out just how I pictured it! Now I can mo

I also finally worked out some stuffed toy storage for my kids! Something I really should have gotten done months ago, they’ve been living with such messy rooms since we moved in.

For my daughter, I crocheted two hammocks out of some Bernat cotton. I added some pom pom yarn to make them less plain, I think it’s pretty fun! The pom pom yarn is from a discontinued line from Loops & Threads, I’ve had it for years and did nothing with it except use it for gift wrapping sometimes.

I put off making these for months but it's finally done... well almost, she needs a third 😐 my girl doesn't like to get rid of anything! #crochetersofinstagram #crochetgirlgang #craftastherapy #amigurumi #toymakers #ourmakerlife

My son also needed some storage for his stuffed animals. I knew he wouldn’t like the crocheted hammocks, so I just bought a couple sets of wire cubes and stacked them four high. Not crafty but walking by his room and seeing them finally organized makes me so happy! You can see a peek of his birthday blanket that I knit last year 🙂

another kid's stuffed toy situation taken care of! I didn't do anything crafty this time but it's making me happy all the same 😄

Thanks for the visit today!

crafting all over the place

crochet
I crocheted up a little unicorn last week, using a pattern from Fresh Stitches, Clarita the Pig. I made some small changes to turn it into a unicorn. The yarn is Hawthorn & Wool in her Unicorn colorway, I bought the yarn with the intention to crochet this Fatty Lumpkin pattern. I crocheted some of it but decided I didn’t actually like how it was turning out, so I tried to find a new pattern, took me awhile but once this pattern came along, I decided to use it. The hair is made from a fun fur I found in a remnants bag from Michaels, I have a lot more of the stuff and am looking for something to make with it. The unicorn is quite small but I’m really happy with how she turned out.

it's a wee unicorn 💖💖 Pattern: Clarita the Pig by @staceytrock I obviously made small changes to make it a unicorn 😀 Yarn: @hawthornandwool in her Unicorn colorway #crochetgirlgang #crochetersofinstagram #craftasth

knitting
New socks are also on my needles, my needles have sat empty for a couple weeks and I felt the need to finally change that. I’m using a set of rainbow neon minis from NikkiSlipp on etsy and a skein of Alegria in the Marshes colorway.

I have no socks on the needles, going to change that this morning #knittersofinstagram #sockknittersofinstagram #craftastherapy #socktawk #makersgonnamake

I wasn’t sure how I was going to knit these socks, I just cast on and went with whatever flew off my needles. I ended up striping the minis at the top and then switching to the Hermione’s Everyday Socks pattern. I am so in love with how the sock is looking!

I had no solid plans when I cast on but I'm very happy with where I've ended up 💕 #knittersofinstagram #sockknittersofinstagram #socktawk #craftastherapy #makersgonnamake #nikkislipp #manosdeluruguay

other yarn goodness
I have been dreaming up projects using pom poms for quite some time but I hadn’t figured out if it would work how I picture it. So, I’m making a little project right now to try it out. It’s going to be for my son and I’m actually very excited about how it’s turning out right now, I’m excited for it to be finished.

working with pom poms again #craftastherapy #pompom #makersgonnamake

This week, we’re getting ready to take a small trip to Edmonton. I found out that the Edmonton Fiber Frolic is happening the same day I will be in town, so I’m excited about checking it out. I have never been able to make it to an event like it before. I’m hoping that the weather gets better for our drive out on Friday, right now it’s storming and raining off and on with quite a few different warnings for the next couple days happening. I’m not a fan of driving on the highway in the rain, so fingers crossed that it is over by then!

Thanks for stopping in! Hope you have a great rest of your week.

a real life finished blanket!

I had some crappy internet troubles again last week (so close to switching providers), so I couldn’t post about the projects I got finished. I feel like I have been so terrible at finishing off projects, blankets especially, that I was pretty excited that I finished pretty close to when I wanted them done.

pom poms 💕 #crochetgirlgang #crochetersofinstagram #craftastherapy #ratschebohohippieblankie #caroncakes

I was addicted to this blanket I crocheted using Caron Cakes. I think I would like to make this pattern again but with different yarn. I’d also make it much bigger, this one ended up 45X45 inches, definitely not big at all. My oldest likes it for curling up under when she’s on the couch though, so it’s being used!

It's done! This was a fun one to put together 😊 Each section is a full Caron Cake, I used the Rainbow Sprinkles colorway. I would happily crochet this type of blanket again! The pattern is from @ratschebutsch under the #ratschebohohippieblankietutor

The pattern for the blanket can be found under the hashtag #ratschebohohippieblankietutorial on instagram. I used a skein of Caron Cakes in the Rainbow Sprinkles colorway for each section of the blanket, I had very tiny leftovers from three of them. For the border, I used almost an entire skein of white Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn. The pattern for the border is free and can be found here.

Fresh off the needles to start the week! pattern: Socks on a Plane yarn: @hawthornandwool in Drift #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #hawthornandwool #socksonaplane #craftastherapy

I also managed to get my socks finished! The pattern is Socks on a Plane and it’s free on ravelry. I knit this pattern once before but gifted the finished socks, so I’m really happy I now I have a pair for myself. I love knitting this pattern, the cable is simple enough that this move pretty quick off the needles. Yarn is by Hawthorn & Wool in the Drift colorway, a local to me yarn. The dyer owns a shop in a town close to me, I visit it as often as I can, it’s beautiful. She’s a florist and does beautiful arrangements, I haven’t got one because my allergies are crazy rough but I have gotten a couple plants from her, I will suck it up at some point, her arrangements are really that gorgeous.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got today. It’s grey and chilly out, so it’s making my brain feel a bit foggy. Hope the weather is sunnier where you are! Thanks for stopping in!

weekend plans

My husband is back from work this weekend and all next week but I think I can squeeze in some time for crocheting and knitting. I would like to be outside though if I can, the weather is supposed to be really good, in the 30’s (celcius). All week my allergies have been fighting against me being out there too long though. darn the growing season! I have allergies all year long but right now is really a crappy time for them.

after too many starts and frogs with this yarn, I feel like I finally found its project! #crochetgirlgang #crochetersofinstagram #craftastherapy #ratschebohohippieblankie #caroncakes

I started a blanket using my Caron Cakes yarn. I have started more than a few projects using it, so I’m happy that I finally found the project it wanted to be. I’m not entirely following the pattern that I found for this, it’s super easy so I only looked at it and started crocheting. It is under the hashtag #ratschebohohippieblankietutorial if you’re interested in it.

this and listening to S-town plus a noisy robin digging right by my open window. #crochetgirlgang #crochetersofinstagram #craftastherapy #ratschebohohippieblankie #potatochipcrochet

I’m really enjoying this project, it’s hard to put aside for any length of time. Granny stitches really are potato chip crochet! When I finally landed on this project, I thought it might be cool to have each section exactly the same but each skein starts and ends on different colors. I’m fine with them not being identical, I think it will still look really cool.

Maybe I'll have another pair of socks after the weekend? #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #craftastherapy #hawthornandwool #socksonaplane

I’d also like to work on these socks. I had planned on finishing last weekend but my arm acted up too much, so I set them to the side. There’s only a couple cables and a toe to finish now. I’ll be happy to have this pair to wear!

I hope that your weather is good where you are and that you can enjoy your weekend! Thanks for stopping in!

year of projects: week 8

Hello, happy Sunday!

I  missed posting an update last week, not sure why I skipped posting but it happened. I do have some progress to share this week though.

socks – 3/20

finally a finished pair of socks! 😄😄 #sockknittersofinstagram #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #boxosoxkal #manosdeluruguay #ggsecondsocksummer

cast off my second sock last night! Love the Jelly Roll pattern! I need to find more yarn to cast on a second pair in the larger size so I can add the arch ribbing #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #sockknittersofinstagram #jellyrollsocks #operationsockdrawe

I finished my Cable & Lace socks! I also finished my Jelly Roll socks! It’s nice to have some finished pairs happening again. I planned on not casting any more socks on until I got the Blueberry Waffle socks off the needles but those aren’t for me…

cast on the new sock pattern from @orangeknits 💓 I haven't knit toe up in a long time, thought it might feel super weird but it all came back to me! Enjoying this one a lot so far! The yarn is Knit Picks Felici in the Balloon Ride colorway :ball

I just cast on this new pair today using Knit Picks Felici in the Balloon Ride colorway. The pattern is a new one called Perle Cottage Socks, if you buy this weekend, it’s 50% off. I’m really enjoying it so far, so much that I may be at the gusset already. It’s my first time knitting a gusset on a toe up sock.

a flipping adorable sheep! 😍 He's naked now but he'll get his sweater soon 🐑 Pattern is by @attic24 #crochetgram #crochetgirlgang #crochetersofinstagram #craftastherapy #amigurumi #crochetaddicts #makersgonnamake

I stumbled onto a super cute sheep pattern and immediately had to crochet one. It was an extremely quick and fun project to crochet. The pattern is Woolly Sheep and can be found for free on Lucy’s site,  Attic24. He still needs a sweater and I will hopefully get to it soon.

I did not work on any of my blankets in the past couple weeks and I didn’t do any projects to fall into my ‘miscellaneous’ category.

See my Year of Projects list here. More bloggers participating in the Year of Projects can be found here, make sure you go check everyone out!

My Yarn Story

I never really had any interest in learning to crochet or knit growing up. I remember my seeing my grandma crocheting blankets but I don’t think I ever asked to try it out. I did want to cross-stitch though and she helped me do a few stitches in a picture that now hangs in my parent’s home. I can’t remember how old I was but I never really stop cross stitching after that.

Sometime in 2008, I was browsing Pinterest and came across a granny square blanket that I fell instantly in love with. I bought some yarn and started googling ‘how to crochet‘. Most websites that I found said that you needed to start out with chaining and ‘sc’ stitches to really learn but that only frustrated me. I think I spent one day failing over and over at that and gave up for awhile. Eventually, I used all the yarn I bought to make my son who was a baby at the time a pom-pom mobile. I thought crochet just wasn’t for me (after ONE day haha).

I participated in some craft swap and received some cotton yarn, so I decided to give crochet one more shot. This time, I decided to just try crocheting a granny square since that is what I wanted to make, so I searched youtube for a video. My first granny square was not pretty but I crocheted it big enough so that my son, who was a baby at the time, could cuddle with it. He liked it, so I count it as a success.

After that, I was definitely hooked on crochet! I crocheted more granny square blankets for other babies that were around then. I just wanted to keep learning.

Crochet was such an amazing discovery for me. Having three kids so young was pretty stressful and crochet was helping me relax a lot. I was still dealing with some scary depression then too, so it was helping me clear my head and I think may have been what helped me ultimately stop having so many anxiety attacks.

I’ve gone through a lot of different fazes in my crocheting lifetime, I would be pretty much obsessed with crocheting only one type of thing for months on end.

The more comfortable I got with crochet, the more I wanted to push myself. So, I eventually made up my own patterns. I shared most of them on my old, no longer updated blog, Plus 3 Crochet, they all still live there today. I haven’t designed or written anything in quite some time, I don’t know that I will share any patterns again but it’s always a possibility.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to give knitting a try too. I knit a couple dishcloths and towels. But, I never truly got the knitting bug until I gave sock knitting a try. I was amazed by so many sock knitters and thought I would never be able to figure out how to knit socks myself until I made it a goal in 2014. I found a tutorial for toe up socks and just went for it. I felt addicted pretty instantly. Socks are such a relaxing knit.

sockmosaic

I don’t crochet as much as I used to now that I’ve really gotten into knitting but I’m trying to work it back into rotation because I’m finding that I’ve missed it. At some point I am sure I’ll find a happy balance.

So, that’s my yarn story! If you made it all the way to the end, thank you so much for reading! I really enjoyed looking back at everything I’ve made since starting my yarn adventures.

year of projects – week 3

I didn’t update last week, I had nothing to really share since I had shared my list so close to the end of the first week. I have things to tick off my list now though!

socks – 1/20
finished my #oneweeksockchallenge socks last night!! 💓 #knittersofinstagram #socktawk #operationsockdrawer #boxosoxkal #rainbowknits

When I first wrote out my list, I didn’t have a number of socks I wanted finished but I updated it and now want to get 20 pairs done this year. I have my Jelly Rolls on the needles right now, so I may be able to cross those off the list next week! I did finish one pair last week as part of the One Week Sock Challenge.

toys – none

blankets – didn’t work on any!

I crocheted a little basket and knit a sock bookmark, both were quick, satisfying projects 🙂 I’m going to start working on a mandala or two this week, need to put that library book to use before it’s due back!

That’s all I have this week, thanks for stopping in! See other Year of Project updates here.
